Full Scholarship
What is a Full Scholarship?
- Covers 100% of tuition, fees, room & board, and textbooks
- Zero or minimal out-of-pocket costs for student-athletes
- Typically awarded in high-profile sports (e.g., American football, basketball) or to top-tier athletes in other sports
- NCAA Division I "head count sports" (e.g., football, basketball for men; basketball, tennis, gymnastics, and volleyball for women) offer only full scholarships
Partial Scholarship
What is a Partial Scholarship?
- Covers a percentage of costs (e.g., tuition only or partial tuition + fees)
- Athletes may need to cover the remaining expenses through personal funds, grants, or financial aid
- Common in NCAA Division II, NAIA, and many Division I sports (non-headcount sports)
- Coaches may divide scholarship funds among multiple players to build a balanced team
Combined Scholarship
Can you combine scholarships?
Yes! Many student-athletes stack scholarships by combining:
🎓 Athletic + Academic Scholarships – If you have strong grades, this can significantly reduce costs.
🏅 Athletic + External Scholarships – Many private organizations offer scholarships for student-athletes.
💼 Work-Study & Grants – Some colleges provide additional financial aid options.
